What are the signs of a clogged dryer vent?

A blocked vent gives clear warnings before it becomes dangerous. If you notice any of these, stop using the dryer for heavy loads and get the vent checked:

• Clothes are still damp after a full cycle, or need two cycles to dry
• The dryer, or the clothes coming out of it, feel unusually hot
• There is a burning or scorched smell while the dryer runs
• The laundry room gets humid or noticeably warm during a cycle
• Lint is visible around the outside vent hood, or the flap does not open
• It has been more than a year since the vent was last cleaned

Why is dryer vent cleaning a safety issue, not just maintenance?

Lint is extremely flammable, and a dryer heating element sits directly in the airflow path. When the duct is packed, hot air cannot escape, heat builds against the trapped lint, and the failure mode is a fire that starts inside the wall. Failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires in the United States.

The other consequence is carbon monoxide. In a gas dryer, a blocked vent can push exhaust gases back into the laundry room instead of outside.

Isn't cleaning the lint trap enough?

No — and this is the single most common misunderstanding we run into. The lint screen catches only a fraction of what comes off your clothes. The rest travels into the duct and settles along its length, especially at bends and at the exterior hood.

You cannot reach that section from inside the dryer. It needs to be cleared from the duct itself, which is what this service does.

Why do long or bendy vent runs clog faster?

Airflow slows at every elbow and over every extra foot of duct. Second-floor laundry rooms, and any run that crosses the house to reach an exterior wall, trap lint far faster than a short straight run through a nearby wall.
